HMWPE 500

High Molecular Weight Polyethylene

Industrial plastic High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (HMWPE) is an unfilled high molecular weight polyethylene offering high abrasion and wear resistant material.

In comparison to HDPE 300, it offers superior wear resistance and impact strength. As well as its excellent chemical resistance, low temperature resistance and low moisture absorption, this material is extremely strong.

What are the main technical properties of HMWPE 500?

HMWPE is normally a black, natural or coloured plastic.  It is often calendered and pressed which will leave lines on the top and bottom of the sheet.

It is a stiff material which can be bent and may take time to return to its original shape. It is also light and will float in water.

If you burn a sample of HMWPE it is non self extinguishing and will give off molten droplets which ususally go out when they reach the bench or floor. The flame will be blue with a yellow tip and just a little smoke and the smell will be that from a candle or paraffin.

How do you identify HMWPE 500

HMWPE 500 is a high molecular weight polyetheylene that is moisture repellent and has good abrasion and impact resistance. Because of this HMWPE is often used for abrasion resistant components in the conveyor and materials handling industries. Its moisture resistance also means it is regularly used in food preparation systems and for chopping boards, although this will require specific food contact grades for direct food contact.

HMWPE is a popular construction material for containers for liquids and food, due to its good ductility, good chemical resistance, food-safety and the fact it can be easily welded.
